Jahah, a VOIP start-up launched a voice phone call service for Twitter users on September 9. 2009. It is called the @Call service and is in beta release. It is only being picked up by blogs today.
To make a call, you just need to tweet a @ reply to the person you want to talk with and add the @call. For example, if you want to call Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, just tweet: @call @biz
Make sure there is a space between @call and @biz and that no additional text is added to your message. JAJAH will call you and your friend and connect the call. Of course, both you and the person you are calling must register their phone numbers with Jajah.
What the heck is this useful for, can’t I just pick up a phone and call someone I want to call? you may ask. Well, for one thing, the call is free. But if you are using a cell phone to make the call, it does not help because you have to pay for air time anyway. Secondly, you may be able to call someone even if you do not know his phone number. But the catch is the person has to be following you on Twitter and has to have his phone number registered on Jajah and enable accept calls from random people. 0
So let’s see if we can find a scenario where this can be useful: You forgot a friend’s phone number but remember his Twitter username, and you know both of you are registered at Jajah and accept calls from Jajah. So instead of dialing the number on your iPhone or click on his username on Skype or Messenger, you tweet your way to a call. Plausible? Nah, if he was a friend, you would have his phone number in your phone or in your IM. So this is almost a useless service in my opinion. There may be some rare cases this can be useful but I can’t think of any. 0
How would you use this service? Or would you use it at all?
